Here We go Magic
A Different Ship
Here We Go Magic is the brainchild of Massachusetts born Luke Temple, a once solo project and now five strong psych-indie spectacular. Since expanding the line-up they have musically matured with every release. Pigeons (2010) was a fantastic expression of plugged-in folk and floating electronics, a display of diverse influences and high level production that they have now turned up a notch.
A Different Ship begins with a tribal industrial stomp that sets a strange atmosphere, before an unexpected halt and unveiling of the charming Hard To Be Close. Dripping in gorgeous reverb and driven on by a determined bass and playground of guitar delight, Temple’s voice creates an intimate tale of a friendship out of sync. Make Up Your Mind is a thigh slapping bluegrass-disco feast, beautifully contrasted by a hushed hypnotic verse and explosive feel-good chorus that will keep you coming back for more.
How Do I Know continues the relentless pitch to stand out – steadily building from hesitant vocal ditty to feel-good head nodder, while the sizzling keyboard section of I Believe In Action persists and is a testament to the perspiring genius rule. The repertoire here is wide and expertly executed, with special applause going to The Sea and Cake reminiscent, Made To Be Old.This album is instantly striking and often satisfyingly contradictory, yet despite the variety of styles, does offer subtler moments. Alone But Moving slows everything down a notch to create a reflective, yet optimistic mood. While respite is provided from Over The Ocean in a sedate, drifting number that plays with the uncomfortable distance between dreams and reality.
A Different Ship is a superbly refreshing album – musically exciting and lyrically rich, it’s a brilliant exploration of self-perception and its occasional mismatch in time. Here We Go Magic impressively weave between different styles while not losing identity or steering too far from the rulebook. A well crafted journey that they have measured twice and cut once – an absolute triumph.
