Rough Trade Shops Heavenly 25
Alchemy exists. For 25 years Heavenly Recordings has been home to rule-breaking musical magic-makers, each HVN release dusted with its own sonic sorcery and to celebrate the anniversary, the label releases a double CD compilation album, Rough Trade Shops HEAVENLY 25 - CD1 features tracks from the label's current roster, while CD2 collects together their recent Record Store Day 7" releases previously only available on vinyl. The compilation is part of the label's continuing 25th anniversary celebrations which are further marked this year as the label curates a stage at the End Of The Road Festival in September. More a way of life than a label, Heavenly is the umbrella under which a legion of like-minded souls gather to create, celebrate and get down. In its earliest years it was home to the riotous small town rage of Manic Street Preachers, the acid-hooligan baggy moves of Flowered Up and the swinging 60s-inflected soul pop of Saint Etienne simultaneously. Disparate crews, for sure, but all united by their outsider status in the cultural landscape. And so the tone was set. Sourcing the good stuff is what Heavenly does best. Follow a line through the back catalogue and you'll find a narrative of an alternative Britain. A quarter century on and the current label roster is its strongest - and most international - yet, with the likes of Temples, Stealing Sheep, The Voyeurs, TOY and The Wytches adding their own chapters to the story, and a clutch of new-signings coming up in their slipstream. Kid Wave, H. Hawkline, Hooton Tennis Club, Eaves, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, DRINKS, Fever The Ghost, Nots and GWENNO are the future. No two bands the same. But all definitely, defiantly Heavenly.
