Gotye
Making Mirrors
The latest “YouTube sensation” is Australian-Belgian one-man-band Gotye – real name Wouter De Backer – whose intensely lo-fi ode to lost lovers, Somebody That I Used to Know, has been viewed more than 66 million times.
It’s taken him a while to find fame: this dizzyingly restless mix of mellifluous harmonies, fuzzy electronica and George Michael-style Eighties pop is his third album. Chopped and diced from a variety of sources, it packs a lyrical punch with some easy on the ear studio pop constructions.
Gotye's exemplary pop sense may be the big revelation of Making Mirrors, yet it's his arty restlessness that will continue to keep him interesting.
