Terry Callier
Occasional Rain
60s 70s Soul Funk classic 1972 from soulfolk legend callier including the great 'ordinary joe' though criminally overlooked and underrated during his late1960s early`70s period of greatest activity enigmatic singersongwriter terry callier was later rediscovered by a new generation of music lovers who appreciated his aheadofitstime mixture of folk jazz and rb 'occasional rain' was callier's second longplayer but the first to showcase his songwriting much of the record is lyrically introspective and melancholy with the chicago native's aching vocals framed by a sparse gentle backing that is pretty without ever becoming easy listening some tunes including the classic 'ordinary joe' are a bit more upbeat with bouncy beatniky beats throughout flutes strings tinkling piano and acoustic guitar combine with jazzy harmony and bluesy vocal inflections to give the album a sound that seems simultaneously both urban and pastoral a career highlight 'occasional rain' is a great introduction to an unusual artist at the height of his powers
