Intelligent techno was one of those really irritating sub-genres that journalists like to invent when they can’t think of anything better to do and this was the album that spawned the term. Ambient techno would have been a better way to describe what Autechre were doing with this atmospheric, melodic debut but it could also have been a mission statement for Warp Records at the time.
