Bert Jansch
Jack Orion
where jansch's previous albums were largely comprised of selfpenned material this third set was drawn from traditional songs bar an instrumental reading of ewan maccoll's 'first time ever i saw your face' the artist's highly original guitar style underpins the lengthy title track and the enthralling 'black water side' jimmy page is only one of many musicians expressing a debt to jansch and the latter track provided the template for 'black mountain side' on led zeppelin i bert's languid interpretation of 'nottamun town' inspired a later version by fairport convention but they struggled to match the enthralling atmosphere created here 'jack orion' is a mesmerizing selection from a hugely influential performer
